Cichlids: An Introduction

Cichlids breeding behaviours can be some of the most interesting among all fishes. The level of parental care cichlids provide rivals that of many other creatures of the animal kingdom. This is especially the case in mouthbrooding cichlids. In fact, in some lakes, this care is so great, that other fish exploit this instinct for the survival of their own species.

The majority of the focus of this blog section will be on African mouthbrooding cichlids, specifically, lake Malawi mbuna. In particular, I will use pseudotropheus saulosi as an example, however the care taking practices and fish behaviours will be quite comparable to the rest of lake Malawi cichlids, and somewhat similar to most cichlids across the globe.

In the coming blog entries, I will discus stocking numbers, tank volume, water temperature, feeding, decor, water parameters, and perhaps a few extra tips I've acquired over the years. I hope you find it informative and helpful in your gaining even more enjoyment from a wonderful hobby.
